2020-03-22 COVID-19 Update

United States Data

Here is today's update regarding the spread of COVID-19 in the United States.
  • US Confirmed Cases: 28,652
  • US Confirmed Deaths: 365
  • US Death Rate: 1.27%
The five-day moving average of the doubling period has remained stable at 1.9 days. Based on today's number of confirmed cases and the current doubling period, here are today's projections if nothing changes and the doubling period remains constant:
  • 50,000 Cases: March 23 (tomorrow)
  • 100,000 Cases: March 25 (three days from now)
  • 1,000,000 Cases: April 1 (about ten days from now)
  • 10,000,000 Cases: April 6 (about two weeks from now)

Global Data

  • Global Confirmed Cases: 318,662
  • Global Confirmed Recovered: 94,704 (30%)
  • Global Confirmed Deaths: 13,672
  • Global Death Rate: 4.29%
There are two bad signs in the global data. First, the five-day moving average for the global doubling period is going down and stands at 6.8 days. This means, globally, confirmed cases are doubling more quickly. Second, the death rate continues to rise, which could be due to hospitals becoming overwhelmed as well as the disease spreading to countries with poorer health systems.

Based on today's cases and the current doubling period, here are the projections for the world if nothing changes and the doubling period remains constant:

  • 500,000 Cases: March 27 (five days from now)
  • 1,000,000 Cases: April 3 (about two weeks from now)
  • 10,000,000 Cases:  April 24 (about five weeks from now)
  • 100,000,000 Cases: May 18 (about eight weeks from now)
