2020-03-27 COVID-19 Update


United States Data

Here is today's update regarding the spread of COVID-19 in the United States.
  • US Confirmed Cases: 89,587 
  • US Confirmed Deaths: 1,344
  • US Death Rate: 1.50%
The five-day moving average of the doubling period lengthened to 2.8 days. The US death rate has risen for the third day in a row to 1.50%. The number of new confirmed cases exceeded 15,000 for the second day in a row.

A note: The United States has a little over 4% of the world's population but currently has 16% of the world's confirmed, reported cases of COVID-19.

Based on today's number of confirmed cases and the current doubling period, here are today's projections if nothing changes and the doubling period remains constant:
  • 100,000 Cases: March 28 (tomorrow)
  • 1,000,000 Cases: April 7 (about ten days from now)
  • 10,000,000 Cases: April 15 (about three weeks from now)

  • Global Confirmed Cases: 549,377
  • Global Confirmed Recovered: 125,875 (23%)
  • Global Confirmed Deaths: 25,342
  • Global Death Rate: 4.6%
The five-day moving average for the global doubling period shortened slightly to 6.1 days. The global death rate continues to rise, now at 4.6%.

Based on today's cases and the current doubling period, here are the projections for the world if nothing changes and the doubling period remains constant:

  • 1,000,000 Cases: April 2 (about a week from today)
  • 10,000,000 Cases: April 22
  • 100,000,000 Cases: May 13

Georgia Data

I have added data and projections for the state of Georgia because that is where a large number of my family and friends live.
  • Georgia Confirmed Cases: 2,001
  • Georgia Cases Currently Hospitalized: 566 (28%)
  • Georgia Confirmed Deaths: 64
  • Georgia Death Rate: 3.2%



The five-day moving average of the doubling period for Georgia shortened to 2.6 days. Based on today's number of confirmed cases and the current doubling period, here are today's projections if nothing changes and the doubling period remains constant:

  • 10,000 Cases: April 3 (about a week from now)
  • 100,000 Cases: April 11 (two weeks from now)
  • 1,000,000 Cases: April 19 (about three weeks from now)
